With our hot sunshine all year round and humid weather in Singapore, it is even more essential when travelling on the roads that our car aircon is working in tip top condition. A drive would otherwise become a hot sweaty affair, amidst breathing in the soot and hearing more noise pollution on the road, with the windows wind down. The car aircon is however, like any other car part also susceptible to damage, with the compressor a common part that may give way after a few years usage. To avoid being caught in such a hot, uncomfortable scenario, regular car aircon servicing would help reduce the chances of such a situation happening, and extend the lifespan of your compressor. Nonetheless, here are five signs you should watch out for a bad aircon compressor.
1. Poor cooling
One of the easiest ways to identify a potentially bad aircon compressor is when you notice it is warmer than usual. If your car aircon is not cooling like it usually does, in spite of the same temperature settings, it could be either due to low refrigerant reserve or bad aircon compressor.
2. Strange noises
The aircon system in a car is designed to work efficiently – and this includes minimal noise. The whole system is closed and sealed for this purpose. However, if there is system breakage or wear, or the compressor bearings are faulty, this would generate noise when the aircon is operating.
3. Faulty Compressor Clutch
The aircon compressor comes with an internal clutch connected to the car engine. Through a pulley, the compressor uses the clutch to draw power from the engine only when needed. If it turns out that the clutch either becomes constantly activated or not all, this means the clutch is faulty.
4. Frequent Circuit Breaker Tripping
When the aircon system is damaged, it consumes more power than usual and also heats up frequently. Your car comes with a circuit breaker which trips when the car overheats or consumers too much power. If your circuit breaker is tripping far too often, it could mean your aircon compressor is damaged.
5. Leaks in the System
The refrigerant is responsible for keeping the aircon working and produce cool air. The entire mechanism is designed to keep the refrigerant within. However, leaks could still occur nonetheless. If you see a leak under your car, it means that the aircon compressor system could be. Do have a mechanic check this for you quickly as this could have health implications. We would also be happy to support you with a check on this.
