Experiencing signs that you may need fuel pump repair?
Have you experienced the following signs below? These could signal that your fuel pump is no longer working properly and you may need fuel pump repair:
- Your car is having problems starting or would not start. This could have arisen from the fuel pump being worn out, and not able to produce the adequate pressure to drive the petrol into the fuel injection system.
- You can still hear the engine cranking, but the engine is unable to start up or require a few more cranks, before the petrol is able to be pushed into the fuel injection system to get the engine running.
- With the pressure issues, as insufficient petrol may enter the fuel injector system, you could experience engine misfires, or the car may not have sufficient power, affecting acceleration.
- You may also hear whining sounds coming from the fuel pump area.

How the fuel pump works
The fuel pump works to ensure that petrol is delivered, from the tank to the engine at the right pressure. There is a connector which supplies power to the fuel pump, as well as sensing wires, on the level of fuel. An electric motor is connected to the pump body, to create the required pressure. There is also a filter at the inlet for the pump, to filter away debris. The fuel then undergoes pressure, and there is a regulator to maintain the pressure level in the system. Before the petrol enters the fuel injector system, there is yet another layer of filter for the petrol.

Common triggers of fuel pump issues
Some of the triggers for fuel pump repair include running the car on overly low petrol levels. While you may think this is economical given the high petrol prices in Singapore, given the lighter weight when less petrol is being carried, this has its issues. This is because, with the lower level of petrol, the fuel pump cannot rely on the weight of the petrol to drive pressure and needs to work much harder.
If water should enter the fuel pump system, it can also lead to corrosion of the the components and lead to failure. Otherwise, it could also be from years of use that the fuel pump has simply undergone wear and tear, but typically this would only be after many years of car usage.

Types of fuel pump repair services
Fuel pump filter replacement
Instead of the fuel pump being damaged, it could also be that the fuel pump filter is clogged up when you experience the above-mentioned signs. This would restrict the flow of the petrol to and out of the fuel pump. In such an instance, we would carry out a fuel pump filter replacement for you. Furthermore, the fuel pump may not be sufficiently cooled and lubricated when there is insufficient petrol running through the system.
Fuel pump replacement
If the electric motor delivering the required pressure is damaged, or in the event of leakage of the fuel pump, we may need to carry out a fuel pump replacement. We would first carry out a diagnostic of the issue to determine the problem, and whether parts replacement would suffice and advise you accordingly. We would always give you a quote on the repair cost and get your go ahead before proceeding with the repair service.
