Frequently Asked Questions

Why the maintenance of hybrid cars is less frequent compared to conventional cars?

The electrical components of hybrid cars rarely require any maintenance. On the other hand, the remaining components undergo less usage compared to conventional cars. For instance, there are fewer moving components as compared to a conventional engine. There are also fewer fluids used, hence also resulting in lesser maintenance.

Why hybrid cars use lower-weight oil?

Compared to conventional cars, hybrid cars use a lower weight/viscosity oil. This is because it is intended for the multiple starts and stops of the car's combustion engine, which arise from its different operating phases. A lighter oil in hybrids also allows better fuel economy while still sufficiently lubricating the engine. It also offers better airflow at start-up, builds up oil pressure more quickly and reaches operating temperature faster.

Why is transmission servicing more important for hybrids than for conventional engines?

In conventional engines, the transmission system serves two purposes: slowing the car when brakes are applied and delivering power to the wheels to move the vehicle. In hybrid cars, it serves an additional purpose: recharging the battery. Since the transmission system in hybrids performs more functions, it becomes as much critical to service it regularly.

How braking in hybrids differs from conventional cars?

Conventional braking systems use force solely to halt the vehicle, leading to loss of energy in friction and heat. However, hybrid cars use a regenerative braking system. Here, the energy used to stop the vehicle can charge the battery or power the motor. This also reduces the force applied and hence makes the brakes last longer with the reduced wear.

What is the unique aspect of hybrid car maintenance?

The most important component of the ‘electrical’ aspect of hybrid cars is the battery, which can die after some years. In most cases, this is visible with a gradual inefficiency while charging, so you would be able to notice the signs, such as increased frequency of charging needed. If you have yet to decide on whether to get a hybrid car, find out more about the benefits of hybrid car ownership.

Testimonials

After my free servicing period for my car, I thought it was time to look out for better priced alternatives. I gave ECV Car Service Singapore a call and tried out their service. It was a hassle free experience and good value. - Kenneth Chin, Buona Vista

I had a tire leak caused by a puncture after driving over some construction debris. ECV Car Service Singapore could fix this up for me so I don't need to spend on a new tire. Friendly workshop! - Mr K.T. Liew, Redhill

My car aircon was not functioning and I was not sure what the cause was. I initially brought my car to the dealer workshop and was told the compressor is down. But the price quoted for the compressor replacement was so high. I then gave ECV Car Service Singapore a call, and the price turned out to be much lower, and quality of service good. Thumbs up! - Joel Tan, Bukit Batok
