With the circuit breaker introduced in Singapore from 7 April, many Singaporeans who work in offices started working from home. Children started online learning, and school holidays were brought forward. Many of the retail shops were closed. Travelling outside from home became much reduced, and as a result many car owners will find their car usage much reduced. Days may even pass with the car not being used at all.
Leaving your car unused for an extended period of time can however lead to some problems. We do, however, have a few suggestions for the upkeep of your car, in this circuit breaker period.
Caring for Car Battery
Your car battery will lose its charge over a period of time, even if just left unused. This process would be speeded up, if there are accessories connected draining your battery, such as your car camera. Starting your car and letting the engine run for 10 minutes every 2 weeks would help charge back your car battery. Alternatively, you can also take your car out for a short spin around the neighbourhood.
Caring for Car Tyres
With your car unmoved, the weight of the car is then on the same spot on the tyres. Over a period of time, this can cause flat spots to develop. This can actually mean that you may need new tyres when you plan to drive out again. Taking your car out for a short spin to charge up your car batteries would also help avoid such an issue arising. Do ensure also adequate air pressure in your tyres in this period of reduced usage.
Caring for Brakes
With our wet and humid weather, an unused car would also mean the rotors of the brakes would start to rust. The handbrake left in its lifted position can also become stuck over a period of time. Taking your car out for a short spin once a week would also address this.
Caring for Fuel Tank
You might think it is okay to leave the fuel tank largely empty with reduced usage. However, rust can form within the tank itself. A full tank will reduce gas tank condensation.
Caring for Interior
Leaving food remnants and packaging in your car can attract unwanted pests like rats to take residence in your car. Remember to also clean your trash out and maintain a clean interior.
