With the high cost of car ownership in Singapore, prolonging the lifespan of our car and its parts can help defray some of the cost of car ownership. The car engine is one of the costlier replacements to make. As such, when you detect there could be signs that your engine is bad, you may wish to get a mechanic to check this quickly for you. This is to avoid the damage extending potentially to other parts, causing a more costly repair or even a replacement. At ECV, we would also suggest alternatives for you for more cost effective repairs, including a top overhaul or complete engine overhaul.
To help you detect where you may have a bad car engine, here are 5 signs:
1. Poor Performance
Have you noticed that your car suddenly is consuming more fuel than normal? This is not only unfriendly on your wallet, with higher fuel expenses, and also damaging to the environment. A possible cause is compression stroke issues within the engine, especially if your car is just a few years old.
2. Illuminated Check Engine Light
Most cars come with their own On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) system. When it illuminates the Check Engine Light on the dashboard, it is the simplest indication of a potential bad engine. Nonetheless, there could also be other reasons behind it, such as a faulty Oxygen sensor, damaged spark plugs, loose fuel cap, etc that our mechanics can check for you.
3. Inconsistent engine
If your engine performance is inconsistent, and produces weird noises like hissing, spitting, or backfiring, these are further hints that there could be something wrong with the engine. The noise could be either due to some mechanical fault or faulty combustion process within the engine.
4. Smoke from Exhaust
The exhaust is supposed to produce gases. However, if the car exhaust is expelling black smoke, this signals incomplete fuel combustion. This can be caused by some mechanical faults in the engine. If there is dark blue smoke, this could indicate the burning of oil within the engine due to some leakage.
5. Strange Odour
Cars are designed such that any smell emissions from its internal processes do not get within the car interior. As such, if you could smell oil or smoke from within the car, it could be a sign something is wrong with the engine.
6. Oil Puddles
If you notice oil puddles beneath your parked car, there could actually be a leak in your engine. This could be from seals in the engine that have deteriorated, or from the plugs or washers. Continued use of the engine can lead to other engine parts being also damaged.
