Experiencing signs that you may need exhaust repair?
Noticed louder-than-usual rumbling from your car’s exhaust or visible leaks underneath? These could be signs of exhaust system issues. Unusual sounds often point to a loose component or a hole causing excess vibration, while leaks may result from worn gaskets or damaged parts.
A faulty exhaust system doesn’t just affect noise—it can reduce engine efficiency and even contribute to overheating. While overheating is commonly linked to radiator problems, it can also be caused by blocked emissions within the exhaust system.

How the car exhaust works
Your car’s exhaust system does more than just reduce noise—it plays a key role in directing exhaust gases safely out of the engine, improving fuel efficiency, and supporting overall engine performance.
The catalytic converter helps protect the environment by converting harmful emissions from combustion into less harmful gases.
The muffler (or silencer) reduces engine noise by reflecting and canceling out sound waves.
The tailpipe channels emissions safely out of the vehicle.
When any part of the exhaust system is damaged or not functioning properly, it can lead to increased pollution, reduced fuel efficiency, and poor engine performance.

Common causes of exhaust problems
Common causes of exhaust problems are rust, causing holes in the components to develop in the process. Water is a by product from the combustion process, which typically escapes in vapour form from the exhaust but some condensation may take place on the parts.
Furthermore, the temperature to which the exhaust is subject to also is extreme, putting strain on the various parts.
The exhaust is also located at the bottom of the car and hence exposed to road debris like stones thrown upwards by vehicles’ tires.

Common types of exhaust repair
Muffler repair, Muffler Replacement
As the muffler works to reduce the vibrations of the engine emissions, louder than usual sounds coming from the exhaust area could be a sign that your muffler is damaged. We would carry out a check to see if this is indeed caused by the muffler. Your car would need to be raised when we do this, and usually if the exterior of the muffler is rusted, the interior conditions could be worse, with holes and also rust. If there is water dripping from various points on the muffler, this could also show that rust could have penetrated the muffler and caused holes. Upon determining what issues there are, we would then either carry out a muffler repair or muffler replacement, depending on the damage.
Exhaust leak repair
If there are leaks coming from the exhaust, we would carry out a check of the entire exhaust manifold to determine where the leak is coming from. As this is comprised of separately joint parts, in carrying out exhaust leak repair, it could be possible to remove the damaged part and replace with a new part. It could also be that a gasket is worn out and needs to be replaced.

Experiencing signs that you may need catalytic converter replacement?
Have you experienced lower engine performance, with a reduction in power and acceleration? Have you noticed that your fuel economy has worsened? Has the check engine indicator lights come on on your dashboard? Do you hear rattling sounds coming from underneath your vehicle? While some of these could be caused by engine problems, these could be symptoms of a faulty catalytic converter, and you may need a catalytic converter replacement.

What the catalytic converter does
The catalytic converter is an important part of your exhaust emissions, that converts the harmful gases produced during the internal combustion process into harmless emissions. The catalytic converter works by heating up to high temperatures when the engine runs, allowing it to burn away the particles in the exhaust and convert them into water vapour and carbon dioxide. The catalyst is usually the most precious piece, made of either platinum, palladium or rhodium.
When the catalytic converter malfunctions, the damage is not only to the external environment, but also to your vehicle. It is hence essential to undertake catalytic converter replacement when this happens.

Common causes of issues for catalytic converter
The problem with the catalytic converter can arise from it becoming clogged up. Oil or coolant could enter the catalytic converter if there are worn out gaskets or piston rings, and these carbon deposits would then cause the catalytic converter to be unable to perform its function. These can lead to a loss of power as well as overheating for the car engine.
In addition, if you have included additives in your fuel, these can contain certain compounds that may damage your catalytic converter.
It could also be that the engine is faulty, causing an incorrect mix of air and fuel to enter the combustion chambers, and unburnt fuel then entering the catalytic converter. This can cause overly high temperature in the catalytic converter and melting of the converter.

How a catalytic converter replacement is done
The only way to check whether your catalytic converter is clogged up would be to remove it from your car, and test how this impacts the engine performance. In removing the catalytic converter, it is necessary to lift the vehicle off the ground, as the catalytic converter is underneath your car.
If a catalytic converter replacement is needed, we would then advise you accordingly.
Seeking a specific type of catalytic converter as replacement?
Three way catalytic converter
The three way catalytic converter is commonly used in cars in Singapore, and it converts the three pollutants – hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide into harmless emissions.
Ceramic catalytic converter
This is a misnomer, as within the car catalytic converter, the core typically is a ceramic block, with a honeycomb structure.
