Experiencing signs that you may need car radiator repair?
Have you found what seems to be radiator coolant leaking underneath your car? Or do you find your car often over-heating, with the needle of your temperature gauge creeping closer to the “H” level than normal? Have you already started seeing steam coming from under your car hood? Is the indicator for low coolant on, on your dashboard? These symptoms may be pointing to issues with your car radiator, and that you may need a car radiator repair.
Causes of car radiator malfunction
One of the common causes of the radiator not functioning properly include insufficient coolant. This could be because the radiator is leaking, possibly from a crack or that a hose has come loose. The crack could have been caused by lack of maintenance, where the coolant has not been topped up properly. The radiator may then rust and holes develop, causing the coolant to leak.
Coolant is important to the cooling function served by the radiator. Coolant flows from the engine to the radiator tubes in a parallel arrangement, the temperature of which is brought down via air blown by fans. The coolant then circulates again to the engine in the cooling process. As such, if the level of coolant is insufficient, the cooling process is not occurring at a sufficient speed and leads to the car over-heating.
It could also be that your coolant has deteriorated or become contaminated, hence reducing the boiling point. This can be seen from the colour of the coolant. There are many possible colours for your coolant, and this could be green, orange, yellow, red, pink or blue, but if it looks like a rusty colour or sludge, it could be that this has mixed with the transmission fluid.
Car coolant leak repair
In the event we have determined there is a coolant leak, we would first check if the car coolant leak is indeed coming the radiator, or if the leak is actually coming from somewhere else. It may instead turn out that the radiator hose, which connects the radiator and the engine has worn out and caused the leak. This is a wear component that needs periodic replacement, and we would in such a case just replace the hose.
Car radiator repair & replacement
If it is such that the car radiator has cracked, our mechanic would need to determine if the hole is small enough for us to carry out the car radiator repair. It could be that this could be soldered back together. During the process, our skilled mechanics would need to clean the radiator thoroughly so as to allow for better adhesion during the soldering process. A heavy voltage soldering iron would then be used, along with a heavy wire to patch up the hole. The surface would then be ground to have a smooth finish.
However, if it turns out that the radiator crack is so severe, it would not be possible to carry out a car radiator repair and you could need a radiator replacement. In such a case, we would advise you on the available options as well as the costs.
