With the general global movement towards greener alternatives, cars have also moved in the same direction, towards electric drive. Hybrid cars are increasingly becoming a preferred choice for buyers. Sales of hybrid vehicles rose by 17 per cent during 2018 -2020 in the US, and by 22 per cent in the European Union in the same period. Singapore is no exception.
The last couple of years have been spectacular for hybrid and electric vehicles sales in Singapore. A decade ago, there was no hybrid vehicle in sight; by 2017, there were 20,000 hybrid passenger cars on the roads. Perhaps the most early adopters of this sub-category were the taxi drivers. In early 2018, one-fifth of taxis in Singapore (around 4,000) were hybrid vehicles.
The enhanced Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) rebates in Singapore became effective in 2021. The rebates were increased substantially from $20,000 to $25,000 for the alternative energy cars, helping to boost the sales of such hybrid and electric vehicles. In the car sales figures for the first half of 2021, a clear correlation could be seen. Among the top 5 car brands, those pushing new hybrid models saw an increase in sales compared to last year. Toyota, which is the top-selling car manufacturer in Singapore, made 55 per cent of its sales from hybrid and electric cars (compared to 33.9 per cent last year). On the other hand, Honda (which has only put limited hybrid models on the road) saw its market share shrink from 14.25 per cent to 10.14 per cent.
Why Hybrid Cars Are Growing in Popularity
There are plenty of reasons why hybrid cars are in demand now. Compared to gasoline cars, hybrid cars are much more environment-friendly and easier to maintain. They are also a lot cheaper than electric cars, which makes them an attractive option. The rebates and subsidies offered by the government also act as an additional bonus. Like many countries, Singapore is aiming to eliminate full-gas cars by 2030. As such, hybrid cars offer users a chance to switch to the electric side without investing too much.
In the coming years, car brands are expected to introduce more models across various vehicle categories. It is clear that hybrid cars will increase its market share in the coming years.

My car aircon was not functioning and I was not sure what the cause was. I initially brought my car to the dealer workshop and was told the compressor is down.
