Experiencing signs that you may need handbrake repair?
The handbrake is an easily forgotten but important component of a car. As a driver in Singapore, you would often find yourself driving up a multi-storey carpark. While waiting for the gantry to open, many of us would engage our handbrakes. Once this opens, we usually retain the handbrake first, until the depressed accelerator gains sufficient moment to move the car forward to avoid back-sliding. If you have found that the handbrake does not seem to stop your car from sliding, it would be essential to get handbrake repair.

How it works
The handbrake cable, usually made of steel, is the mechanical tool for engaging the braking powers. Commonly, the cable engages the lever for the drum brakes when engaged.
An alternative system is the electric brakes, which uses electric motors to operate the brakes.

Common signs of handbrake problems
- A sign that your handbrake has worn out is when you find the braking ability impaired. Your car may be continuing to roll down a slope even after the handbrake is engaged.
- If the handbrake light stays engaged even when you have released the handbrake, the cable could be jammed up. You may then be driving with the handbrake still engaged.

Common handbrake repairs needed
We would first carry out an assessment of the type of handbrake system you have, whether this is electric or cable operated:
- For cables, for a jammed cable, we would assess if lubricant to the cable and levers would suffice.
- Broken cables would need replacement.
- For electric systems, we would check the functioning of the electric motors.
While carrying out handbrake repair services, we would also assess the brake drums and pads functions to ensure your utmost safety.
