5 Symptoms of a Bad Car Radiator

The main purpose of a car radiator is to prevent the engine from overheating. It is essential to spot the signs of a failing radiator, as a damaged engine could turn out to be a very expensive repair. As the engine generates heat when it is running, coolant absorbs the heat and passes it via the radiator to get it cooled off. Subsequently, the coolant will then be circulated back to the engine. The radiator is hence a vital part of the cooling system.

Here are the 5 signs of a bad car radiator.

1. Leaking Coolant

The coolant moves via the radiator, and in the event there is a leak, the coolant will leak on the ground beneath the car. If you notice leaked liquid underneath your parked car, it would be advised to have your car checked. The coolants do come in various colours, depending on your car model. You could take note of the colour of the leaked liquid, and inform the workshop that you call.

2. Car Overheats

When the radiator is faulty, your car engine will continuously overheat. You can observe this on the temperature gauge on your dashboard. If the issue persists, the engine will continue to overheat and it will lead to the breakdown of your car.

3. Contaminated build-up

Coolant colours are typically yellowish, greenish, or reddish. When the coolant appears rusty, this indicates a buildup of some contaminant in the radiator. The thickened fluid will slow down in its flow to and from the engine and the radiator. This will cause the cooling process to become inefficient and can lead to engine overheating.

4. Low Coolant Levels

When you consistently have to add coolant to your radiator or low coolant light flashes frequently, there could be coolant leaks.

5. Fins on Radiator contorted

As the fins on the radiator could be hit by flying gravel, they can get contorted over time. This will impede air flow and affect the cooling process of the radiator.

After my free servicing period for my car, I thought it was time to look out for better priced alternatives. I gave ECV Car Service Singapore a call and tried out their service. It was a hassle free experience and good value. - Kenneth Chin, Buona Vista

I had a tire leak caused by a puncture after driving over some construction debris. ECV Car Service Singapore could fix this up for me so I don't need to spend on a new tire. Friendly workshop! - Mr K.T. Liew, Redhill

My car aircon was not functioning and I was not sure what the cause was. I initially brought my car to the dealer workshop and was told the compressor is down. But the price quoted for the compressor replacement was so high. I then gave ECV Car Service Singapore a call, and the price turned out to be much lower, and quality of service good. Thumbs up! - Joel Tan, Bukit Batok
