Do I need higher octane petrol?
There is a lot of misconception that the highest octane petrol is the best suited for cars. There are impressions formed that the higher the octane rating, the greater the power can be derived, and the better the performance of the engine. This can mean spending unnecessary additional dollars without bringing any benefits, given that going higher octane means about 20 cents more for each litre. This translates to more than $350 a year in additional petrol spend, for a typical car operating at 11km/ litre and travelling 20,000 km a year.
An understanding of what octane rating to go for first requires an understanding of what the rating means. The higher the rating, this means that a higher level of compression is needed for the fuel to light up. What this simply means is that the octane level is used for determining what are the conditions that will allow a controlled burning of the fuel.
What petrol do I need then?
For a start, it is good to look at your car manufacturer’s recommendation. To use a higher octane rating than required will bring no additional benefit to your car, and just lead to a higher petrol expense. Typically, cars that require the highest octane rating are the cars with high performance engines.
In the event though, that if your car requires a higher octane rating, and you choose to use a lower rating petrol, your car may still operate fine. There could be reduced fuel economies as a result. However, if you start to experience “knocking”, switch back to the designed octane rating and see if the issue is resolved. In severe instances, due to higher than intended pressures faced, the engine can actually be damaged in the process and require repair or replacement.
We also recommend servicing your car regularly to have your car in tip top condition and at its optimal fuel economies.
