Getting to the 100,000km mark and looking to replace timing belt?
The timing belt serves the purpose to work as the connecting point between the crankshaft and camshaft, such that the engine’s valves open and close at the right timing. This is essential since the valves are letting in air and petrol into the engine. If the timing belt is not working properly, the synchronisation of the movement of the parts would go off and can lead to costly damaged pistons and bent valves. It is hence essential to follow the car manual’s guidelines to replace timing belt timely. We can advise you accordingly, with this dependent on your car make as the specifications differ. This is given that the timing belt is made of rubber, and would hence deteriorate with use. The change is typically very infrequent, at about 100,000 km. In addition, not all cars have a timing belt; there are cars that instead come with timing chains.

Signs of needing to replace timing belt
There are also a few ways to determine if you may have a timing belt problem before the prescribed replacement time. For instance, if you hear a high pitched sound coming from the engine side, it could signal that the timing belt is worn. We would then have to take a closer look at what is causing this sound. A visual inspection of the belt then would help us ascertain the condition.

Process to replace timing belt
When we replace timing belt, we would first need to remove all the connecting parts to the timing belt, which is held under a timing belt cover. An alignment of the camshaft and rotor is then required. We would then need to loosen the tensioner on the belt, which is held tight with the mounting bolts. After replacing a new belt in, we would again tighten this accordingly and set the various parts in proper alignment.
