What does wheel alignment mean?
As we sometimes encounter bad roads or drive on rougher grounds, this can affect our wheel alignment. This is different from tire rotation and balancing as wheel alignment refers to setting the angles of the wheels to the correct specification rather than the weight distribution. By having the wheels set to the right angle, this helps to spread the wear and tear across the tires and also ensure the car is going straight when the steering is angled as such. Wheels are also an important component for your safety on the road, taking on the weight of the vehicle as well as being a stopping mechanism when you brake. It is hence essential they are in good working order.

Common issues when wheel alignment is off
If the wheels are not properly aligned, the common problems you may notice are that:
- The car may veer towards either the left or right side;
- The tire wear could be uneven, and appear saw-like; and
- The car may not be going straight even when the steering is angled to be.

Frequency of wheel alignment chekcs
When you first collect your new car, at the servicing mark of 5,000km, wheel alignment would be carried out along with the adjustments to the suspension. Thereafter, a check on the alignment of your wheels should be carried out every 10,000 km.

Adjustments made during wheel alignment
When we carry out the alignment check for you, one of the key things we would look out for is the camber. This refers to the inward or outward tilt of the tire. When the bearings or ball joints are worn, the camber could go off, and would then need to be adjusted back to the correct angle.
We would also check for the toe, or the angle at which the tires turn in or out.
Another check is on the caster, which refers to the alignment with the steering axis. Where the alignments are off, we would then adjust these back accordingly.
