Which one do I need?
When maintaining your vehicle’s automatic transmission, you will frequently encounter two service options: a transmission fluid change and a transmission fluid flush. While they may sound similar, they are operationally different. Choosing the wrong method for your vehicle's current mileage and condition can negatively affect gear-shifting performance as well as long-term gearbox reliability.
What is the difference?
As a quick explanation, a transmission fluid change is a conservative maintenance process that drains and replaces roughly 40% to 60% of the fluid via gravity. A transmission flush uses specialized equipment to replace 100% of the fluid and clear out deep internal sludge. For most older or high-mileage cars in Singapore, a traditional fluid change is the safer, manufacturer-recommended option.
What Is a Transmission Fluid Change?
A transmission fluid change is a traditional pan-drop service that drains old fluid using gravity and replaces it with fresh lubricant.
- The Process: Only a partial volume of the fluid is removed (typically leaving old fluid trapped inside the
torque converter and cooler lines). - The transmission pan is removed and cleaned of metallic dust, the pan
gasket is swapped, and the internal filter is replaced or cleaned before refilling. - Best For: Routine preventive maintenance at standard mileage intervals.
What Is a Transmission Flush?
A transmission flush is a comprehensive, machine-assisted service designed to exchange the entire fluid volume within the transmission system.
- The Process: A professional flushing machine is connected to the transmission cooler lines. It uses the
vehicle's built-in pump or external pressure to completely purge 100% of the spent fluid, circulating a
cleaning agent to force out deeply embedded dirt, varnish, and suspended contaminants before pumping in completely fresh fluid. - Best For: Severely neglected or heavily contaminated systems that require a total fluid reset (determined
on a case-by-case basis).
When Do You Need a Fluid Change vs. a Flush?
Choose a Transmission Fluid Change If:
- You strictly follow regular manufacturer service intervals.
- Your transmission fluid is slightly dark but free of burnt smells or heavy debris.
- You drive a vehicle sensitive to pressure changes, such as a Toyota Corolla Altis or a Honda Civic utilizing a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
- Your priority is safe, conservative, factory-approved preventive care.
Consider a Transmission Flush Only If:
- The fluid is heavily degraded or contaminated, but an inspection proves the internal clutch packs are still structurally sound.
- The vehicle manufacturer explicitly lists a machine flush as an approved service procedure.
- A professional diagnostic scan confirms that gear hesitation is caused by fluid varnish rather than
mechanical component failure.

My car aircon was not functioning and I was not sure what the cause was. I initially brought my car to the dealer workshop and was told the compressor is down. But the price quoted for the compressor replacement was so high. I then gave ECV Car Service Singapore a call, and the price turned out to be much lower, and quality of service good. Thumbs up! - Joel Tan, Bukit Batok
